“The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life…” (Proverbs 10:11)
Did you know that God gave Solomon the wisdom and talent to compose 1,005 songs and 3,000 Proverbs! Simply amazing! And, did you know that every one of these God-given Proverbs deals with successful living in our relationships with God and with other people. In short, we will reap what we sow. Furthermore, according to this very wise man, a major part of what we sow IS WHAT WE SAY!
Never underestimate the potential of your words! In Proverbs 10:11, Solomon sees our words flowing from our mouths like an active fountain. But Jesus took this truth a step further when He said, “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matt. 12:34). Now if the “heart” means the core of who you are, then Jesus was saying that our words are a direct outflow of who we really are. In other words, the vocabulary of your mouth is nothing less than the overflow of the vocabulary of your heart.
• A pure heart speaks pure words—a corrupt heart speaks corrupt words.
• A peaceful heart speaks peaceful words—an agitated heart speaks agitated words.
• A forgiving heart speaks forgiving words—an angry heart speaks angry words.
One more thing—did you know that scientists have spent over forty years perfecting what is known as “voice printing?” In fact, now people can be identified and cataloged not just with their fingerprints, but with their voice prints. Then again, as Solomon also said, “there’s nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9); what comes out of our mouths really does identify who we are.
